Which tiles are suitable for a bathroom?

Almost any tile works on the wall. On the floor, use a tile approved for floors, usually porcelain stoneware. In a walk-in shower, barefoot slip resistance counts: class B to DIN 51097.

Slip resistance: what counts in the shower

Data sheets often show two values. The R value is tested with shoes, class A, B or C barefoot and wet. In the shower, the barefoot class counts.

Barefoot, wet (DIN 51097)

  1. Afrom 12°
  2. Bfrom 18°
  3. Cfrom 24°

Private bathrooms have no legal requirement. The German accident insurance (DGUV) names B for shower areas.

With shoes (DIN 51130)

  1. R96–10°
  2. R1010–19°
  3. R1119–27°
  4. R1227–35°
  5. R13over 35°

R10 is a common choice for the bathroom floor. Some manufacturers recommend R11 together with B in the shower.

Grout, waterproofing, care

  • Cement or epoxy

Cement grout is the rule in bathrooms. Epoxy grout is easy to clean and resists aggressive cleaners.

  • Joint width

The tile manufacturer sets the width. For Equipe Argile, for example, it is at least 2 mm.

  • Grout colour

Grout in the tile's tone looks calm, a contrasting grout shows the grid. Choose the grout last, with the sample in your hand.

  • Mould

Air the room after showering and squeegee the wall and floor. Have silicone joints with cracks or mould renewed.

  • Waterproofing

A tiled walk-in shower belongs to the highest moisture class, W4. The tiler does the waterproofing, for example with the DITRA mat. For balconies and terraces there is the DITRA Drain mat.

  • Cleaning

Clean porcelain with a neutral cleaner. Cement grout tolerates only mild acids. Clean structured shower floors with a soft brush.

Frequently asked questions

Which slip class do I need in the shower?

Class B to DIN 51097, tested barefoot and wet. Private bathrooms have no legal requirement, but the German accident insurance (DGUV) names B for shower areas. An R value alone is not enough, because it is tested with shoes.

Is R10 enough in the bathroom?

For the bathroom floor, R10 is a common choice. In the shower, the barefoot class counts too. Some manufacturers recommend R11 together with B there.

Can I use large tiles in a walk-in shower?

Yes, with a shower channel at the wall and a slope in one direction. With a point drain, large slabs are cut diagonally. Plan the drain and the format together with your tiler.

Can I lay wall tiles on the floor?

Only if the manufacturer approves them for floors. White-body wall tiles, such as Marazzi Pietra di Sardegna Wall, are for walls only.

Can I use the same tile for the wall and the floor?

Yes, if it is approved for both, such as Ariostea Ultra Pietre or Mutina Pico. In the shower, you then choose the slip-resistant version of the same series.

Do you also have tiles for the WC?

Yes. The same rules apply to the WC as to the wall and the bathroom floor. Bring measurements and photos to the consultation.

What does the consultation cost?

Nothing. The consultation in our showroom is free and without obligation, and samples to take home are included. Bring a floor plan, measurements and photos of the bathroom.

Do you also install?

On request, we also install. Mention it during the consultation.
