Real travertine or travertine look?

Real travertine is a porous limestone: every slab is different, but acid dulls the surface. Travertine-look porcelain copies the pattern, is not limestone and has tested slip resistance up to R11.

Pores and surface

Open pores look natural, but dirt collects in them. Filled means the pores are filled with a colour-matched compound. Honed is flat, brushed is velvety, tumbled has soft, rounded edges.

Bands or clouds

The way the stone block is sawn decides the pattern.

Care: no acid

Real travertine is limestone. Lemon, vinegar and acidic cleaners can dull the surface. Wipe up spills at once.

  • Clean with neutral products

A neutral cleaner, stone soap or mild washing-up liquid with warm water. Stein & Co states cleaners with pH 7 to 14 for its travertine.

  • Sealing helps but does not fully protect

An impregnating sealer makes the stone more stain-resistant. It does not make it stain-proof.

  • Showers without descaler

Acidic descalers attack real travertine. Squeegee the water off. If you want little care, choose porcelain.

  • Pools: no saltwater

Stein & Co does not recommend natural stone for saltwater pools. Stein & Co states that its travertine suits chlorine pools and swimming ponds.

Frequently asked questions about travertine

Does the consultation cost anything?

No. The consultation in our showroom is free and without obligation. Samples to take home are included.

Is travertine look real travertine?

No. Travertine look is porcelain with a copied pattern. Real travertine is natural stone, for example from Stein & Co.

Can I use travertine in a shower?

Yes, with the right surface. For showers in public baths, DGUV Information 207-006 names group B; Mystone PTV reaches B, Strutturato C. Real travertine also works, but it does not tolerate acidic descalers.

Is travertine frost-resistant?

The products on this page are, according to their makers: Stein & Co for its travertine, Marazzi for Mystone Travertino and Travertino20. For terraces, use 30 mm natural stone or 20 mm porcelain.

Do I need to seal travertine?

For real travertine it makes sense, because it then resists stains better. It does not become stain-proof, though. Ask for the product that suits your stone.

What does filled mean?

The pores are filled with a colour-matched compound. The surface is then closed and easier to clean. Open pores look more natural, but dirt collects in them.

Does travertine suit a kitchen?

Yes, if you can live with marks. Lemon and vinegar can dull real travertine. If you do not want that, choose travertine-look porcelain.

Do you also install?

Yes, on request. You can also just choose your tiles with us.
